Project Hope: Refugee Resettlement
Project Hope - St. Patrick's Parish Update - October 23, 2016
As we return to our regular routines following the summer holidays, the Project Hope Parish Resettlement Team would like to provide a brief update on the status of our refugee resettlement efforts to date. We are pleased to report that the Kabak family is doing well: both John and Meray have secured employment and the children are enjoying the beginning of a new school year.
The second family to whom we were initially assigned received an offer of resettlement from the Australian government, which came while they were still awaiting an offer from the Canadian government. The family has decided to accept the offer of resettlement in Australia so they will not be coming to Canada. Let us continue to keep them and all refugees in our prayers.
Through the generous outpouring of our parish’s support for the Archdiocesan Project Hope initiative, St. Patrick’s community raised almost $60,000. Initially we had hoped to potentially support the resettlement of two families, which came with a commitment to support each of those families for one year or until an offer of resettlement was accepted in another country (as is the case for the second family). As the monies specifically raised for Project Hope were part of the Archdiocesan wide campaign, they will still be used to support refugee resettlement efforts within the Archdiocese of Toronto. All of the items generously donated to the second family will be distributed to local organizations to support others in need.
The Project Hope Parish Resettlement team looks forward to continuing to journey with the Kabak family, who has brought much to our parish community! However, given the present long wait times for Immigration Canada to process refugee applications, we have prayerfully discerned to not sponsor another family for now and will re-evaluate the ministry in one year’s time.
Peace and Blessings to you all, in deep gratitude for your generous support and prayers. Your love and care are changing the world!
